Class Happenings:

This week in math, your child will be learning how to count various coins and bills, as well as how to count change. Your child will also learn how to round money and solve word problems with the ‘draw a picture’ strategy. Money concepts are an easy skill to reinforce at home with real money. You can also help your child when you are in a store. Ask them to round the various prices found on items throughout the store.

We will continue to read Mr. Popper’s Penguins this week. My ambition is to make it through chapter 6 this week, as we were unable to make it that far last week. The story out of the reading anthology for this week is: The Cat Who Became a Poet. Ask your child to tell you the crazy story of the cat who ate a poetry-reciting mouse. Even though this is a shortened week due to the Labor Day holiday, there will still be a comprehension test, as well as a spelling test on Thursday.

The spelling test each Friday will consist of 18 new words and review words from previous weeks. These words will be a random selection of words from the list given at the beginning of the week. There will also be two application words. These are words that the students will not know ahead of time. These are there to test what the students have learned through all of the daily spelling lessons.

Homework for this week:
Monday - Spelling: Complete the 3 memory steps for the first 12 words and 2 challenge words on the homework sheet. Math: Complete the workbook page entitled Coins and Bills.

Tuesday - Spelling: Complete the 3 memory steps for the last 12 words and 2 remaining challenge words. Math: Complete the workbook page entitled Making and Counting Change.
Reminders:

Each student is encouraged to bring a healthy snack to school each day for enjoyment in the middle of the morning before lunch is served at 11:20.

We move at a brisk working pace in class. Please encourage your child to do his or her very best to get each assignment done on time so that he or she does not fall behind on classwork assignments.

*****Please be sure to check your child’s bookbag for graded papers. Students will be receiving graded papers to take home nearly every day. Sometimes these papers can get mixed in with other papers used daily in class. These papers do not need to be returned to school after they have been reviewed. Please note that some papers will not have grades on them. Papers with no grade are practice pages that the students complete on a daily basis in the morning and at the beginning of each math lesson.

Science Corner:

Look here each week for an update to what the students are learning in Science, as written by the students themselves!

This week the students will be learning about convection and radiation through an interactive lesson in the computer lab. Be sure to ask them on Thursday afternoon about their experience with insulators in a fun experiment that they will conduct on that day.

Wish List:

Thank you very much to the Dinkins family for purchasing a brand new electric pencil sharpener for our classroom. The children and I both appreciate having a pencil sharpener that works well.
Projects:

The Probe notebook topic due on Thursday, September 2nd is: Angels.

Please encourage your child to turn this assignment in each Friday. If the assignment is not turned in on time, there is a 5 point penalty with each day that it is late (with a maximum of 15 points off).
